The dependence on temporal circumstances to establish the truth of past events is a recurrent issue of historical knowledge. However, the claim of scientific rationality can get lost between the fugacity of relativity and the rigidity of dogmatism. History, as a demonstrable rational knowledge, needs to establish a truthful and reliable relationship between the narrative and its empirical basis. In order to make possible such an enterprise, seven reasonable and universal requisites of truthfulness are proposed: moderate realism; the methodical convention concerning knowledge quality control; the linguistic and cultural community of sense; man’s rational aptitude of knowing the past; the reconstructibility of past things; the criticism of sources for the reconstruction of the past; the linguistic and cultural rationality of narrative and meta-narrative. The conjunction of these factors allows the assertion of relational truths or certainties.
