A temática desenvolvimento sustentável, por seu caráter complexo e ao mesmo tempo se apresentar como
elemento de fundamental importância para se enfrentar a crise ambiental, tem despertado a atenção de diversos
atores no âmbito da sociedade. Como forma de compreendê-lo, vários sistemas de indicadores surgiram para
mensurar o nível de sustentabilidade de países, estados e, mais recentemente, de municípios. O objetivo desse
artigo é apresentar o índice de desenvolvimento sustentável em Pedras de Fogo/PB como forma de subsidiar o
planejamento da sua sustentabilidade. A metodologia aplicada parte da pesquisa de Martins e Cândido (2008), a
qual tem por propósito medir o índice de desenvolvimento sustentável para municípios. A análise dos resultados
se efetivou comparando-se o nível de desenvolvimento sustentável de todos os municípios paraibanos com a
cidade de Pedras de Fogo/PB. O prognóstico para a localidade em estudo tem por referência além dessa
metodologia, entrevistas semi estruturadas com alguns atores sociais do Poder Público em Pedras de Fogo/PB.
Os resultados apontam que se faz necessário um planejamento da sustentabilidade municipal considerando as
dimensões: social, demográfica, político-institucional, econômica, ambiental e cultural.

The sustainable development is a complex and fundamental issue to face the environmental crisis and because of
that it calls the different segments of the society attention. As a mechanism to understand this important issue,
several system- level indicators have arisen in order to measure the level of sustainability of countries, states and
more recently, the cities. The aim of this article is to show the sustainability development index of Pedras de
Fogo /PB as a mean to purchase the city planning .The methodology applied is based on the research of Martins
and Candido (2008),which objective is to measure the sustainability development of the cities. The analysis of
the results was obtained through a comparison between the sustainable development level of the other cities in
Paraiba with the one of Pedras de Fogo. The results obtained were based not only on Martins and Candido
methodology but also semi-structured interviews with some local authorities. The results show that a city
sustainable planning is necessary taking into consideration the following dimensions: social, demographic,
political -institutional, economic, environmental and cultural.
