Caiman crocodilus yacare EM EXPERIMENTO CONTROLADO: CONFIRMAÇÃO ESTATÍSTICA DE SUA CONTRIBUIÇÃO AO BALANÇO DE NUTRIENTES EM UM ECOSSISTEMA AQUÁTICO DO PANTANAL MATO-GROSSENSE, BRASIL.

Este estudo teve como objetivo confirmar, estatisticamente, através de experimentos controlados a contribuição
de Caiman crocodilus yacare para a ciclagem de nutrientes na lagoa Baía das Pedras, Pantanal de Poconé - MT.
Estudos com este enfoque foram iniciados no Pantanal apenas no final da década de 90, na lagoa Baía das
Pedras, onde, durante o período de estiagem, foram contabilizados cerca de 1000 indivíduos da espécie Caiman
crocodilus yacare em apenas 20.800 m2, área da lagoa. Nesse período de estiagem a produtividade da lagoa é
muito elevada em relação ao período da cheia, quando a água fica transparente, sendo que os jacarés
desempenham naquele período um importante papel. Foi utilizado para o experimento um cativeiro de 8x6 m,
com uma única caída para água. No centro do cativeiro há um tanque de concreto de 4x2 m e com 30 cm de
profundidade. O animal foi colocado após a estabilização das variáveis limnológicas do tanque. Foram coletadas
6 amostras de água, sendo três antes e três depois da presença do jacaré. O jacaré, de 2,18 m de comprimento
total e pesando 57,8 kg foi alimentado todos os dias, logo após feita as determinações limnológicas, com peixe
fresco da espécie Prochilodus lineatus (incluindo as vísceras). Foram realizadas análises de nitrogênio e fósforo
totais, amônio, nitrato, nitrito e ortofosfato das amostras de água coletadas no tanque. Verificou-se o importante
papel de Cayman crocodilus yacare no experimento e para as regiões onde habita.

This study has like purpose to confirm, statistically, through controlled experiments the contribution of Caiman
crocodilus yacare for the nutrient cycling of the lake Baía das pedras, Pantanal de Poconé - MT. Studies with this
focus, beginnings only on 90’s endings, on the lake, during dry phase were counted about 1000 individuals of
Caiman crocodilus yacare on only 20.800 m2. On this period the productivity of the lake is very high in relation
to high water period, when the water became transparent, being that the Caymans develop on that time a very
important role. It was used for the experiment a captivity of 8x6 m, with only one exit for water. In the center of
the captivity there is a pool with 4x2 m width and 30 cm of depth. The animal was putted after the stabilization
of the limnological variables inside of the pool. It were collected 6 samples of water, being three before and three
after of the presence of the Cayman. The Cayman with 2,18 m size, with 57,8 kg was feed every day, Just after
the limnologicals determinations, with fresh fish of specie Prochilodus lineatus (including visceral parts). It were
realized total nitrogen and phosphorous analyzes, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite and orthophosphate of the water
collected from the pool. It was verified the important role of Cayman crocodilus yacare in the experiment and in
the region where it leaves.
