Se a menção aos “fatos alternativos” relacionados ao evento de posse do presidente norte-americano Donald J. Trump em janeiro de 2017 auxiliou o aumento do número de vendas de 1984, de George Orwell, sem dúvida isso está relacionado ao fato de, no mundo ficcional da obra-prima do escritor inglês, o governo controlar todo e qualquer tipo de informação, resultando em um abuso indiscriminado da memória e da história. Nesse sentido, pretendemos analisar a operacionalidade das manipulações de memória colocadas em prática pelo regime totalitário vigente em Oceânia, espaço no qual ocorrem os eventos de 1984.

If the mention to the “alternative facts” related to the inauguration event of US President Donald J. Trump in January 2017 aided George Orwell’s 1984 sales increase, this is no doubt related to the fact that, in the fictional world of the English writer’s masterpiece, the government control all and any kind of information, resulting in an indiscriminate abuse of memory and history. In this sense, we intend to analyze the operability of the memory manipulations put into practice by the totalitarian regime in force in Oceania, the space in which the events of 1984 occur.
