No mundo católico ocidental do Antigo Regime, todos os recém-nascidos obrigatoriamente tinham que receber o batismo. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa, é analisar a prática do batismo na formação social da Freguesia da Cidade do Natal, entre os anos setecentistas e oitocentistas, estabelecendo conexões com outras figurações sociais da América portuguesa e castelhana, demonstrando como o ato de batizar era sobretudo um fato social total. Para isso, as fontes investigadas foram: os documentos de batismo, os documentos de óbito, o primeiro livro de Tombo da Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação, entre outras. Todo examinado à luz de referenciais da história social.

In the catholic western world in the Antique Regime, all newborn babies, obligatory, had to be baptized. Therefore, the aim of this research is to analyse the practice of baptism in the social formation of the Parish of the city of Natal, between the 1700s and 1800s, establishing connections with other social figurations in Portuguese and Spanish America. For this, the sources investigated were: the documents of baptism, documents of death, the first registry book of the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Apresentação, among others. Everything analysed in the light of Social History referencial.
