É comum ouvir historiadores de prestÃgio emitirem opiniões desfavoráveis à epistemologia da
história: “ninguém se torna um historiador sendo um metodólogo da históriaâ€. A Escola dos
Annales expressou a sua desconfiança em relação à discussão teórico-metodológica, que
considerava vazia, abstrata, e incitava os jovens historiadores a procurarem produzir pesquisas
apenas sobre exemplos e fatos concretos. Este é o problema abordado nesse artigo: qual seria
o valor e o alcance cientÃfico do debate epistemológico-metodológico para a cultura histórica?
Pode um historiador ser considerado culto e competente sem nenhuma preparação teóricometodológica? Pode um professor, mesmo do ensino fundamental e médio, ensinar história
sem nenhuma bagagem teórico-metodológica? A epistemologia deve ficar restrita a alguns
pequenos cÃrculos eruditos ou deve envolver todos os membros da comunidade de
historiadores? Contra o empirismo historiográfico, o autor defende o lugar central da teoriametodologia na cultura histórica.
It’s usual to hear prestigious historians emitting their unfavorable opinions
about Epistemology of History: “nobody become a historian being just a methodologist
of historyâ€. The Annales School expressed its suspects about the theoric and
methodological discussion, thought as empty and abstract, and motivated young
historians to realize researches only about examples and concrete facts. This is the point
which this article talks about: which should be the value and the scientific reach of this
epistemological and methodological debate to the historical culture? Can an historian be
considered cult and competent without theoric and methodological preparation? Can a
professor, even of elementary or high school to teach history with no kind of theoric or
methodological approach? The epistemology must to be restricted to some little erudite
circles or must to involve all the members of the community of historians? Against the
historical empiricism the author defends the central place of theory and methodology in
historical culture.
