In this paper, we describe the uses of seu and dele, referents of the 3rd person, in Portuguese spoken by university students from the state of Sergipe. Based on McKay and Fulkerson (1979), we consider that the pronouns seu and dele, besides acting as substitutes, assume the function of determining their predecessors. Departing from the descriptive/inferential method, and with the support of Variationist Sociolinguistics, we performed the quantification and analysis of 34 sociolinguistic interviews – taken from the Falares Sergipanos database (FREITAG, 2013) – made with university speakers from the cities of Aracaju, Itabaiana and São Cristóvão. We obtained a total of 392 realizations of the phenomenon, 50% (197/392) for the variant dele. We note that there is productivity of the possessives as dominant, although with low rates (6% 24/392), the substitute function predominates. The other independent variables indicate that 3P possessives are found in specific contexts of use.
