PORTUGAL E INGLATERRA NO PERÍODO POMBALINO: RELAÇÕES E INFLUÊNCIAS SOBRE OS CONFLITOS ENTRE ESPANHÓIS E PORTUGUESES NA REGIÃO DO PRATA

Resumo Português:

O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar as ambíguas relações estabelecidas entre Portugal e Inglaterra no período Pombalino (1750-1777), enfocando suas consequências nos conflitos ocorridos entre Portugal e Espanha, dando ênfase à região do Prata, que resultaram na assinatura do Tratado de Santo Ildefonso. Dessa forma, é realizado um estudo sobre os antecedentes da aliança política e econômica anglo-lusitana, concretizada a partir do Tratado de Methuen (1703). Também é levado em consideração nessa análise o período em que Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (Conde de Oeiras e depois Marquês de Pombal) prestou serviços a coroa portuguesa como embaixador português em Londres, entre 1738 e 1742. Este período teria servido para Pombal entender os motivos da supremacia britânica sobre Portugal e também servido de base para as medidas adotadas quando subiu ao poder como primeiro ministro de D. José I.

The present article aims at analyzing the ambiguous relations between
Portugal and England in the period of Pombalism (1750-1777), to focus on its
consequences on the conflicts that happened between Portugal and Spain, giving
emphasis to the region from the Prata, which resulted in the signature of the Treaty of
Santo Ildefonso. Thus one study was carried out about the antecedents of the political
and economic alliance between England and Portugal, from the signature of the Treaty
of Methuen (1703). We also took in consideration analysis of the period during which
Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (the Marquis of Pombal) worked for the Portuguese
crown as a Portuguese Ambassador in London, between 1738 and 1742. This period
helped Pombal understand the motives of the British supremacy over Portugal and
informed the measures adopted when he has raised to the power as the prime minister of
D. José I
