O presente artigo tem o objetivo de discutir a relação entre a revolução informacional e os avanços da informática e das telecomunicações, que convergiram para uma mesma base tecnológica. Para compreensão da revolução informacional, parte-se dos fenômenos de explosão da quantidade de informação e implosão do tempo, que resultaram em elevados fluxos de informação. Na sequência, o artigo aborda a nova forma de organização da atual sociedade, denominada sociedade da informação ou do conhecimento por alguns autores, o conceito de informação sob a perspectiva da Ciência da Informação, bem como o papel da evolução tecnológica neste processo de transformação social. Conclui-se que a revolução informacional e os avanços tecnológicos estão intimamente interligados, sendo que seus efeitos continuam a exercer forte influência sobre a sociedade e a economia.
This article aims to discuss the relationship between the information revolution and the advances in computing and telecommunications, which have converged on the same technological basis. In order to understand the informational revolution, it starts with the phenomenon of explosion of the quantity of information and implosion of time, which resulted in high information flows. Then the article addresses the new form of organization of the present society, calls information society or knowledge by some authors, the concept of information from the perspective of information science, as well as the role of technological evolution in this process of social transformation. It is concluded that the information revolution and technological advances are closely intertwined, and that their effects continue to exert a strong influence on society and economy.
