This paper analyses the sanitary public policies of Belo Horizonte city between 1955 and 1965. In this
period the sanitary works had great importance in the city’s political scenario gaining space in official discourses and serving as a tool to gain voters. Nevertheless, the deficit in the water distribution system had increased in these years, caused by the city’s fast population growth and by its poor sanitary infrastructure. Thus, the definitive solution of the water shortage became an obsession of the politicians and the citizens of Belo Horizonte.
