O artigo visa explorar o pensamento filosófico de Thomas Paine (1737-1809), no que este toca as questões religiosas. Paine, um deÃsta que julgava a BÃblia como um livro herético, escreveu alguns artigos em que desacreditou as profecias bÃblicas, em análises feitas a partir da Razão ilustrada. Tal Razão foi definida por Tom Paine como “a árvore proibida do sacerdócioâ€, já que a BÃlbia, se lida pela lente das Luzes, seria despida de todo conteúdo de verdade. Assim, o trabalho almeja expor uma das vertentes da crÃtica iluminista à s sociedades cristãs dos séculos XVIII e XIX.
This article aims to explore the philosophical thought of Tom Paine (1737-1809) which is concerned with religion. Paine, a deist who judged the Bible as a heretic book, wrote some papers in which he disbelieved the biblical prophecies, in readings guided by the enlightened Reason. Such Reason was defined by Paine as being “the forbidden tree of priestcraftâ€, since the Bible, if read through the lens of the Enlightenment, would lose all its claims for truth. The goal is to expose one of the many types of the enlightened criticism which were addressed to XVIIIth and XIXth century’s christian societies.
