Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o desenvolvimento dos municÃpios da região do Litoral
Norte do Rio Grande do Sul. Para isso, foi construÃdo um Ãndice de desenvolvimento relativo, o
qual permite verificar os fatores do desenvolvimento bem como hierarquizar os municÃpios segundo
o nÃvel relativo de desenvolvimento. Os resultados mostram que, em uma escala de 0 a 100, o Ãndice
médio de desenvolvimento situou-se em 46,8. A ordenação segundo o grau de desenvolvimento
evidencia que mais da metade dos municÃpios da região encontram-se na categoria de baixo
desenvolvimento relativo. Os resultados mostram também que os fatores de subdesenvolvimento
são diferentes entre os municÃpios da região, possibilitando a focalização de polÃticas públicas.
This study aims to examine the development of the municipalities of the coastal region of Rio
Grande do Sul through the index of relative development, which allows to investigate factors of
development as well as to rank the municipalities according to the level of development
comparatively. The results show that, on a scale of 0 to 100, the average development index stood at
46.8. The development degree ordering shows that more than half of the municipalities in the region
are in the low relative development. The results also show that the factors of underdevelopment are
different between the municipalities, allowing the focus of public policy by municipality.
