“THE DARK AGES OF WAR”: UMA ANÁLISE DA OBRA THE ART OF WAR IN THE MIDDLE AGES (1885) DO HISTORIADOR MILITAR BRITÂNICO CHARLES OMAN

Por muito tempo uma historiografia militar tradicional, situada aos fins do século XIX e inicio do século XX, difundira a ideia de que não havia uma planificação tático-estratégica por parte das lideranças militares que ditavam os rumos dos conflitos ocorridos no cenário bélico medieval. Tendo isto em vista, este breve artigo objetiva compreender quais os principais fundamentos defendidos por este viés de pensamento, tomando para isso como corpus documental de análise, a obra The Art of War in the Middle Ages (1885) do historiador militar britânico Charles Chadwick Oman, por entender que tal obra nos oferece um sintomático paradigma do pensamento historiográfico de toda uma corrente em questão. Nossa perspectiva está em sintonia com as novas vertentes de abordagem da temática bélica no Medievo, em especial, as pesquisas conduzidas pelo medievalista Francisco García Fitz, da qual utilizamos para contrapor as ideias defendidas por essa antiga historiografia militar. Assim, o nosso artigo também está direcionado a ilustrar como tem sido efetuada uma benéfica renovação dos estudos direcionados a temática em questão.

For a long time the traditional military historiography, situated in the late
XIXth and early XXth centuries, disseminated the idea that there was not a tactical and
strategic planning by the military leaders that dictated the course of the conflicts
occurred in the medieval warfare scene. With this in mind, this brief article aims to comprehend what are the main principles defended by this way of thinking, taking thus as source the work The Art of War in Middle Ages (1885) from the military historian Charles Chadwick Oman, understanding that this work offers us a symptomatic paradigm of a historiographical thought trend. In tune with the new trends of approach on the medieval warfare theme, mostly, the researches produced by the medievalist Francisco García Fitz, which we use to counter
the ideas defended by this traditional military historiography, our article is directed to illustrate how a benefic renovation on the studies directed to this theme has been conducted.
