Em 17 de julho de 1902, foi inaugurada, no Liceu de Arte e Ofícios do Rio de Janeiro, a “Exposição de Arte Portuguesa”, organizada pelo representante de artistas lusitanos Guilherme da Rosa. Foi nessa mostra que a Escola Nacional de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro (ENBA) adquiriu o conjunto de quadros que veio a constituir o núcleo da sua coleção de pintura portuguesa oito-novecentista, possivelmente a mais significativa existente no Brasil. O presente texto visa apresentar a exposição de 1902, relacionando-a ao contexto mais amplo de intensificação das trocas comerciais e culturais entre Portugal e Brasil, verificável com o advento do século XX.
On July 17, 1902, the “Portuguese Art Exhibition” was inaugurated at the School of Arts and Crafts of Rio de Janeiro by Guilherme da Rosa, a representative of Portuguese artists. It was on this exhibition that the National School of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro purchased a group of paintings that came to constitute the core of its collection of Portuguese art, possibly the most significant in Brazil. This article aims to present this exhibition, relating it to the broader context of commercial and cultural exchanges between Portugal and Brazil in the begin of the 20th century.
