As relações interétnicas entre indígenas e não indígenas se construíram, ao longo da História do Brasil, a partir de uma complexidade que perpassa agências, negociações e violências, evidenciadas na documentação histórica que trata daquelas relações. Objetivamos, nesse texto, abordar um episódio de violência extrema perpetrada contra um indígena da Etnia Macuxi, no início do século XX, na região metropolitana de Manaus –AM. A partir das epistemologias da História Indígena, buscou-se compreender como se construíram os contatos interétnicos, a exploração da mão de obra indígena, os agentes sociais envolvidos e as consequências de tais contatos para esses sujeitos. Do ponto de vista metodológico, realizamos uma pesquisa histórica em fontes periódicas (jornais), nas quais estão contidas as principais (e únicas) informações sobre o episódio, o que nos permite ter um vislumbre de como se processavam (ou se processam) as relações interétnicas entre indígenas e não indígenas nessa parte da Amazônia. Como resultado principal, foi possível identificar que os jornais são uma importante fonte histórica sobre a região da confluência dos rios Negro e Solimões e que um dos principais componentes das relações entre indígenas e não indígenas foi a violência, um elemento que atravessou a História da Amazônia e que permanece até os dias atuais. Através dessa pesquisa, pode-se ter um melhor entendimento das mudanças e permanências nas relações interétnicas, especialmente das questões que têm cerceado os direitos à cidadania e ao respeito da diversidade étnico-racial dos Povos Indígenas da Amazônia.
Interethnic relations between indigenous and non-indigenous people have been built, throughout thehistory of Brazil, based on a complexity that encompasses agencies, negotiations and violence, evidenced in the historical documentation that deals with those relations. In this text, we aim to address an episode of extreme violence perpetrated against anindigenous person of the Macuxi ethnic group in the early 20th century, in the metropolitan region of Manaus, Amazonas. Based on the epistemologies of Indigenous History, we sought to understand how interethnic contacts were constructed, the exploitation of indigenous labor, the social agents involved, and the consequences of such contacts for these individuals. From a methodological point of view, we conducted historical research in periodical sources (newspapers), which contain the main (and only) information about the episode, which allows us to have a glimpse of how interethnic relations between indigenous and non-indigenous people were processed (or are processed) in this part of the Amazon. The main result was that newspapers are an important historical source about the region where the Negro and Solimões rivers meet, and that one of the main components of relations between indigenous and non-indigenous people was violence, an element that has permeated the history of the Amazon and continues to this day. Through this research, it is possible to better understand the changes and continuities in interethnic relations.
