O artigo busca evidenciar as exposições da Sociedade Histórica de New York dedicadas ao 11 de setembro de 2011, discutindo a memória da dor, a comunicação museológica e a recepção do público. Para fixar um lugar de memória, o museu, que realizou 17 exposições sobre esse fato anunciou mais uma exposição no circuito cultural norte-americano de 8 de setembro a 1º de abril de 2012, composta por fotografias dos ataques às Torres Gêmeas. Montadas para relembrar a dor e proporcionar reflexões acerca do trágico, as exposições atingem seus objetivos junto a maioria dos visitantes. Ao evocar a dor também atuam no fortalecimento da nação, ao afirmar sua “vocação” para curar as feridas e prosseguir com relativo heroísmo de quem sobrevive à um destino adverso. O espaço expositivo, o circuito da visita, o cenário, a iluminação, as vitrines compõem elementos que permitem ver as exposições como representações sociais do tempo presente na formulação de sentidos da interpretação individual e coletiva.

The article seeks to highlight the exhibits of the New York Historical Society dedicated to the memory of September 11, 2011, discussing the pain, the Museum communication and public reception. To fix a place of memory, the Museum, which was held 17 exhibitions about this fact announced more an exhibition at the cultural circuit, 8 September to April 1, 2012, composed by photographs of the attacks on the Twin Towers. Assembled to remember the pain and provide reflections on the tragic, the exhibitions reach their goals with the most visitors. To evoke the pain also operate in the strengthening of the nation, saying his “vocation” to heal the wounds and continue on heroism of who survives an adverse fate. The exhibiting space, the circuit of the visit, the scenery, lighting, the showcases comprise elements that let you see the exhibitions as social representations of present tense in the formulation of individual and collective senses of interpretation.
