The essay comparatively discusses the characters of Samuel Beckett and
João Gilberto Noll within the theme errancy. Beckett's characters on the
novels "Molloy" and "Malone Dies" and on the plays "Waiting for Godot"
and "Endgame" are taken into consideration, whereas Noll's character is
regarded more generally, as if he were the same lonely marginal errant in
several books. In order to qualify the debate about errancy, three figures are
brought up: the flâneur, the situacionist with his dérive and the postmodern
nomad, respectively theorized by Charles Baudelaire, Guy Debord
and Michel Maffesoli. These figures that dislocate make one notice,
though, that João Gilberto Noll's errant characters are not as closely related
to them as are Samuel Beckett's stationary characters.
