O presente artigo tem por intuito apresentar o significado original do termo “meme” e a ciência proposta através dele. A Memética visa aplicar os modelos matemáticos, computacionais e conceituais da biologia ao estudo da cultura através de uma analogia do gene com o meme, que seria a unidade de transmissão cultural. Quando proposta, durante o final do século XX, a Memética recebeu várias críticas. Duas destas críticas serão tratadas aqui. A primeira dize respeito ao substrato físico dos memes e a segunda diz respeito ao papel do sujeito livre e da criatividade no processo de escolha e criação de novos memes.
This article aims to present the original meaning of the term “meme” and the science proposed through it. Memetics aims to apply the mathematical, computational, and conceptual models of biology to the study of culture through an analogy of the gene with the meme, which would be the cultural transmission unit. When proposed, during the late twentieth century, Memetics received several criticisms. Two of these criticisms will be addressed here. The first concerns the physical substrate of memes, and the second concerns the role of the free subject and creativity in choosing and creating new memes.
