This article aimed to demonstrate the studies developed in Brazil that related the characteristics of the built environment (CA) with the practice of physical activity (PA), as well as to identify the most investigated populations and characterize the main gaps to be filled by future studies. For this purpose, searches were performed for articles indexed in the PUBMED, BIREME and SCIELO databases, peer-reviewed, published from 1990, in Portuguese and English, between January and February 2020. Of this search, 26 articles were selected, all had a cross-sectional design; 17 were developed in the southern region of Brazil, a region with a high Human Development Index (HDI); 21 used the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), in the long version, to measure PA; 15 used the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Survey (NEWS-A) to assess CA characteristics related to PA practice. The environmental variable “presence of recreational facilities”, such as squares, fields, soccer clubs, bicycle paths and hiking trails, showed significant associations with PA in different domains. These results showed that this theme was more investigated in capitals, with high HDI, which suggests that further research should be conducted in interior cities, with lower HDI, to identify whether these associations are repeated or differ in these contexts.
