Food plants are those that have one or more parts (or derivatives thereof) that can be used directly in human food. The ora pro - nobis (OPN) is na unconventional food plant (PANC), its flounders can be used in food preparations exerting great influence in feeding traditional populations. The consumption of fresh vegetables has diminished in several regions of the country, with this the Ministry of Agriculture Livestock and Supply of Brazil has promoted the rescue of the cultivation and use of the vegetables. The relevance of unconventional vegetables is due to the significant nutritional value, which contributes vitamins, minerals and proteins to a higher calorie - protein intake of the diet of low - income populations. In view of this perspective, the amount of fresh leaf proteins of ora – pro - nobis, cultivated in the Nursery of the Santa Marcelina Hospital (HSM) of Porto Velho - RO, was determined in order to explore the potential of this plant for food purposes in the northern region. In the chemical analysis of 100 g fresh leaves of ora – pro - nobis, 4.87 g of protein was found. Vegetables generally have up to 3g of protein in their composition. Analyzes with OPN in other regions of the country reported little more than 3g of protein in the composition, the results diverge according to the region. OPN leaves are an excellent source of protein and can be included in the diet of the population, including low - income, collaborating with the protein supply in an accessible and healthy way.
