The present work describes the general, macroscopic and microscopic anatomical structure of "maria-preta" wood ( Maba inconstans (Jacq.) Gray - Ebenaceae), a native tree of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The anatomy of this species is compared with the descriptions found in the usual literature of this botanical family. It was found a great anatomical affinity between the studied species and the general characteristics of the woods of the Diospyros genus .
