Analisar os antecedentes da Permanência de estudantes em cursos de graduação em uma Instituição de Ensino Superior (IES) do Estado de Santa Catarina se constitui no objetivo desta pesquisa. Para tal propôs-se testar um modelo teórico dos possÃveis determinantes da Permanência de estudantes em IES. O presente estudo, de caráter quantitativo, foi realizado no primeiro semestre de 2009. O universo pesquisado constituiu-se de 415 estudantes matriculados nesta instituição. A amostra foi selecionada por conveniência, sendo pesquisados todos os estudantes que se fizeram presentes no dia da aplicação. Os resultados evidenciaram que os acadêmicos, em sua maioria, correspondem ao gênero feminino, sendo solteiros, com idade média de 21 anos. O método de análise dos dados foi Modelagem de Equações Estruturais (MEE). Dos antecedentes testados, Compromisso do Estudante com suas Metas Pessoais, Satisfação com a IES e Situação Financeira Favorável, nesta ordem, foram os principais explicadores diretos da Permanência. Estas três variáveis, acompanhadas por suas ligações, explicaram 61,2% da Permanência. Interagem indiretamente com a Permanência os construtos Aprendizagem Percebida, Acesso a Infraestrutura e Atitude da Coordenação e dos Professores. Sugestões são apresentadas ao final deste trabalho.

The background of the permanence of students in undergraduate courses at a Higher Education Institution (IES) of the State of Santa Catarina constitutes the objective of this research. To this end it is proposed to test a theoretical model of the determinants of Permanence of students in IESs he present study, quantitative character, was accomplished in the first half of 2009. The universe of this study consisted selected according to the availability of access, being researched all the students who were present on the day of application. Data were collected through structured questionnaire. The results showed that students, mostly correspond to the female gender, being unmarried, with a mean age of 21 years. The method of data analysis was structural equation modeling (MEE). Backgrounds tested the Student Commitment to their Personal Goals, Satisfaction with IES, Financial Situation Favorable and, in that order, were the direct predictors of permanency. These three variables, accompanied by his bonds, explained 61.2% of permanence. Interact indirectly with the Permanence constructs Perceived Learning, Access to Infrastructure and Attitude of the Coordination and Teachers. Suggestions are included at the end of this work.
