Este artigo versa a respeito da intrincada posição de São Bernardo sobre a arte. De um lado, uma interpretação comum de seus escritos o posiciona como um inimigo da arte, enquanto que de outro, há farta evidência de seu talento artístico pessoal. O problema demanda um cuidadoso exame das ideias de São Bernardo quanto às variadas formas de arte, incluindo literatura, música e arquitetura, à luz do contexto histórico e de seus objetivos espirituais. Estas considerações revelam a existência de uma autêntica estética em São Bernardo, uma busca pela beleza a partir de sua relação com a verdade, tornando possível encontrar nele não um inimigo, mas um verdadeiro patrono da arte.

This article deals with the intricate question of St. Bernard’s position on art. On one hand, a common interpretation of his writings designate him as an enemy of the arts, while on the other hand, there is abundant evidence of his being a gifted artist in his own right. The problem demands a careful examination of St. Bernard’s ideas regarding various art forms, including literature, music and architecture, in light of both the historical context and his spiritual objectives. These considerations reveal an authentic aesthetics in St. Bernard, a search for beauty in its relation to truth, making it possible to find in him, not an enemy, but a veritable patron of the arts.
