In this paper, we analyze a specific category of intellectual – the artist-intellectual. This category emerges in Brazil in the 60’s, as a result of a specific “structure of feeling†and of a historical context in which political and cultural debate thematized mainly a national-popular project. We focus our analysis on two emblematic personalities that represent, in different ways, this national-popular project: Ariano Suassuna and Caetano Veloso. These two antagonistic personalities make use of several media platforms, as newspapers, television and internet, to expose their ideas, and promote a public discussion about the concepts of national and popular culture in Brazil nowadays.
