Do ponto de vista do método, o objetivo deste ensaio é demonstrar como as “rupturas” e as “continuidades” ou “tempo curto” e o “tempo longo” auxiliam na compreensão do “tempo histórico” em sua dimensão “estrutural”. Nesses termos, vale ressaltar que não estamos comprometidos com a construção de narrativa que dê conta de uma história do “início” ao “fim”, mas pretendemos demonstrar como os diferentes encontros realizados no âmbito da Associação dos Geógrafos Brasileiros (AGB), ajudam a compreender a dinâmica da associação nos últimos 80 anos. Diante dessa premissa, também entendemos a possibilidade de contribuir para a compreensão do pensamento geográfico brasileiro desses mesmos períodos — décadas de 1940, 1950, 1970 e 1980 — e, por consequência, do tempo presente. O que pretendemos com o texto é apresentar, no conjunto da diversidade de eventos, os que foram inaugurais em cada modalidade e assim poder compreender, à luz das transformações, mediadas em seus processos históricos amplos, o surgimento, a realização e as características da primeira edição da Assembleia Geral Ordinária da AGB, em 1946; do primeiro Congresso Brasileiro de Geógrafos (CBG), em 1954; do primeiro Encontro Nacional de Geógrafos (ENG), em 1972; do primeiro Encontro Nacional de Ensino de Geografia — “Fala Professor”, em 1987.
From the point of view of method, the objective of this essay is to demonstrate how “ruptures” and “continuities” or “short time” and “long time” help to understand “historical time” in its “structural” dimension. In these terms, it is worth noting that we are not committed to building a narrative that tells a story from “beginning” to “end”, but we intend to demonstrate how the different meetings held within the scope of the Associação dos Geografos Brasileiros (AGB) help to understand the dynamics of the association over the past 80 years. Given this premise, we also understand the possibility of contributing to the understanding of Brazilian geographic thought in those same periods — the 1940s, 1950s, 1970s and 1980s — and, consequently, of the present time. What we intend with the text is to present, in the set of the diversity of events, those that were inaugural in each modality and thus be able to understand, in the light of the transformations, mediated in its broad historical processes, the emergence, the realization and the characteristics of the first edition of the Ordinary General Assembly of the AGB, in 1946; the first Brazilian Congress of Geographers (CBG), in 1954; the first National Meeting of Geographers (ENG), in 1972; of the first National Geography Teaching Meeting — “Fala Professor”, in 1987.
