Dentre as várias menções diretas e indiretas feitas a Jesus Cristo, ao Cristianismo e à Igreja Católica nas obras de Camilo Castelo Branco (1825-1890), Divindade de Jesus (1865) é, sem dúvidas, a principal narrativa camiliana em que tais temáticas e outras questões correlatas a elas são alvos de atenção por parte do escritor. De acordo com afirmações contidas em uma carta enviada ao Visconde de Azevedo (1809 – 1876), que comumente precede o texto da obra em várias edições, Camilo propõe que sua narrativa é uma espécie de resposta a obras críticas que colocaram em dúvida a condição divina de Jesus, citando especialmente Vie de Jésus (1863), do intelectual francês Ernest Renan (1823-1892). Para além de apresentar as principais características de Divindade de Jesus, o objetivo deste trabalho é averiguar em que medida Camilo lida com o pensamento (anti)clerical e (anti)religioso oitocentista, fomentado pela publicação de diversas exegeses bíblicas em torno da figura de Jesus Cristo, entre as quais Vie de Jésus é um dos exemplos mais contundentes.

Among the many direct and indirect mentions to Jesus Christ, the Christianity and the Catholic Church in the works of Camilo Castelo Branco (1825- 1890) the ones related to the Divinity of Jesus (1865) is certainly the main topic that calls the author attention, among the other topics related to it. According to a letter sent by the author to Visconde D´Azevedo, one of those which commonly proceeds the work itself in many editions, Camilo gives the idea that his narrative would be a kind of answer to the critical works that questions the divine condition of Jesus, specially Vie de Jesus (1863) of the french intelectual Ernest Renan (1823-1892). More than just representing Jesus main divine characteristics, the goal of this article is to analyze how Camilo deals with the (anti)clerical and (anti)religious thoughts from the 19th century. Especially due to the publication of the biblical exegesis around Jesus Christ among which Vie de Jésus is one of the most important samples.
