A busca do cateter ideal é contínua. Este deve apresentar: longa permanência, baixa complicação, acesso à circulação com mínimo risco durante inserção e remoção, fácil manutenção, baixo custo e aceitação por parte do paciente, além de oferecer um razoável conforto. O presente estudo analisa a literatura científica sobre cateteres totalmente implantáveis. Foram examinados oito artigos que abordaram o tema “cateter totalmente implantável em pacientes oncológicos”, publicados em periódicos nacionais e internacionais, de janeiro de 1986 a janeiro de 2005, e indexados nas bases de dados: Lilacs, Scielo, e Bdenf. Vários estudos têm destacado as vantagens do uso dos cateteres totalmente implantáveis, salientando as baixas taxas de complicação, a segurança, e a conveniência do uso dos acessos totalmente implantáveis em paciente sob regime prolongado de quimioterapia. Concluímos então que o número de complicações observadas é baixo em face das grandes vantagens que o uso dos cateteres propicia.
The search for the ideal catheter is ongoing. It should have the following characteristics: long-term use, low complications, access to the circulation with minimal risk during insertion and removal, easy maintenance, low cost and patient acceptance, in addition to offering reasonable comfort. This study analyzes the scientific literature on totally implantable catheters. Eight articles that addressed the topic “totally implantable catheter in cancer patients” were examined, published in national and international journals from January 1986 to January 2005 and indexed in the following databases: Lilacs, Scielo, and Bdenf. Several studies have highlighted the advantages of using totally implantable catheters, emphasizing the low complication rates, safety, and convenience of using totally implantable accesses in patients undergoing prolonged chemotherapy. We conclude that the number of complications observed is low in view of the great advantages that the use of catheters provides.
