A CIDADE CONTEMPORÂNEA E A VIOLÊNCIA DA SEGREGAÇÃO: UM OLHAR SOBRE JOÃO PESSOA

Este trabalho é fruto de uma pesquisa de mestrado
realizada junto ao programa de pós-graduação em Sociologia na
UFPB. Nele analisam-se as relações entre cidadania, segregação e
violência no contexto da vida urbana contemporânea, tomando
como referência o bairro de Bancários, um dos bairros da região sul
de João Pessoa, que abriga grupos socioeconômicos diferenciados.
O objetivo geral aqui destacado foi discutir um pouco a noção de
Cidade, não em sua complexidade, mas enfatizando as questões
de segregação e violência, partindo das diferenciações sociais e
dos seus desdobramentos, e da distribuição e apropriação dos
espaços urbanos. Os dados foram qualitativamente selecionados,
utilizando-se fundamentalmente o método etnográfico. A análise
confirma a segregação social existente no bairro, e mostra que
comportamentos de violência podem estar associados a esse
fenômeno.

This work is the result of a research conducted by the
graduate program in sociology at UFPB. In it we analyze the
relationships between citizenship, segregation and violence in the
context of contemporary urban life, with reference to the banking
district, one of the neighborhoods south of Joao Pessoa, which
houses different socioeconomic groups. The overall goal here was
seconded discuss the notion of a little town, not in its complexity, but
emphasizing the issues of segregation and violence, from the social
differentiations and their ramifications, and the distribution and
appropriation of urban spaces. The data were qualitatively selected,using essentially the method ethnographic. The analysis confirms the
social segregation existing in the neighborhood, and shows that
violent behavior may be associated with this phenomenon.
