O presente artigo aborda aspectos do processo de estigmatização sobre as populações da periferia urbana de São Luís-MA, por meio da análise de condicionantes históricos e estruturais relacionados à formação dos bairros periféricos onde habitavam tais populações. Para tanto, identificamos na imprensa escrita elementos simbólicos e discursivos associados às populações dos bairros periféricos, durante a década de 1980 e no ano de 2004.
This article discusses aspects of the process of stigmatization on the populations of the urban periphery of São Luís- MA, through the analysis of historical and structural constraints related to the formation of the outlying districts, where such people lived. To this end, we identified in the press and discursive symbolic elements associated with the populations of the suburbs during the 1980s and in 2004.
