No início do século XX a cidade de Natal passou por uma série de intervenções urbanísticas coordenadas pela administração pública, sob apoio das elites locais. Esse período de transições foi marcado por tensões entre antigas tradições e as novas práticas sociais, estimuladas pelos grupos interessados na modernização da cidade. Dessa forma, uma mobilização de parte da população em prol da chamada ‘civilidade’, vai se mostrar em alguns momentos desfavorável às manifestações populares. As festas de rua, especialmente o popular carnaval, são vitrines privilegiadas para a observação das transformações dos hábitos, dos choques culturais e das ansiedades de parte das elites locais em tornar Natal uma cidade moderna e civilizada.

At the beginning of the 20th century Natal went though a sequence of urban interventions coordinated by the public administration, and supported by the local elites. This period of transitions was marked by tensions between old traditions and new social conducts, stimulated by the groups interested in modernizing the city. That way, the citizens’ mobilization to support what they called civilizing, revealed, some times, unfavorable to the popular manifestations. The street celebrations, particularly the popular carnival are privileged windows where we can observe the changing of the habits, the cultural shocks and the local elites’ anxieties to make Natal become a modern and civilized city.
