Partindo da análise da Tese VII das Teses sobre o Conceito de História de Walter Benjamin, este artigo pretende compreender o significado sócio-histórico dos conflitos em torno da regionalidade como traço distintivo das elites na busca de seu papel identitário na cidade de Cuiabá. A construção desta identidade ocorre pela apropriação de bens culturais das populações tradicionalmente marginalizadas no cenário sócio-político local e, recentemente, estas populações têm suas manifestações culturais próprias usadas como fundamento simbólico das elites locais em seu confronto com o migrante.
Starting of the analysis of Thesis VII of the Walter Benjamin’s Theses on the Philosophy of History, this article intends to understand the historical meaning of the conflicts about the locality as distinctive trace of the elites in the search of its identitary scene in the city of Cuiabá. The construction of this identity occurs through appropriation of cultural things of the society populations traditionally kept out of local scene and, recently, these populations has its used proper cultural manifestations as symbolic bedding of the local elites in its confrontation with the migrant.
