CONTRIBUCIONES ACTUALES DE LA PSICOLOGÍA DEL DESARROLLO Y DEL ENVEJECIMIENTO EN LA INVESTIGACIÓN DE LA SABIDURÍA

In the last decades, the empirical research about the construct “wisdom”
has progressed primarily under the cognitive paradigm, Positive
Psychology and Gerontology. In this essay, first, we review the
psycho-gerontological approach to the scientific study of wisdom,
then we describe the factors that enabled its emergence. Second,
we examine the conceptual and operational definition of wisdom in
Psychology of Development and Ageing. In a review of major theoretical
and empirical perspectives on wisdom, we present a possible
classification. It explores the implicit theories and the explicit theories,
distinguishing the theories of the mature personality and the cognitive
theories. In these latter theories, we propose to analyze three different
paradigms: 1. the Dialectical and Neo-constructivist approach,
2. the Life-Span approach, and 3. the approach of the Practical and
Tacit Knowledge. Third, we examine the controversial issue about
the relationship between wisdom and age, and the myth of “wise
old person”, briefly discussing the empirical evidence. Reflections
about the applied and practical implications of gerontological research
in wisdom are done. Finally, as a way of theoretical integration,
we present a conceptual synthesis, and we outline the prospects
and challenges in the advancement of elucidation and assessment
of this multidimensional construct in the Psychogerontology field.

Resumo Espanhol:

En las últimas décadas la investigación empírica del constructo sabiduría ha progresado fundamentalmente bajo el paradigma cognitivo, la Psicología Positiva y la Gerontología. En este ensayo, primero, se revisa la aproximación psico-gerontológica al estudio científico de la sabiduría, describiendo los factores que permitieron su emergencia. Segundo, se analiza la delimitación conceptual y operacional de la sabiduría en la Psicología del desarrollo y del envejecimiento. En una revisión de las principales perspectivas teórico-empíricas acerca de la sabiduría, se presenta una propuesta de clasificación. Se abordan las teorías implícitas y las explícitas, distinguiendo las teorías de la personalidad madura y las teorías cognitivas. En éstas últimas proponemos diferenciar tres paradigmas: 1. el enfoque Dialéctico-Neoconstructivista, 2. el enfoque del Ciclo Vital, y 3. el enfoque del Conocimiento Tácito y Práctico. Tercero, se examina la cuestión aun controversial de la relación ente sabiduría y edad, y el mito del “viejo sabio”, discutiendo brevemente la evidencia empírica. Se reflexiona sobre las implicaciones prácticas y aplicadas de la investigación gerontológica en sabiduría. Por último, a modo de integración teórica, se presenta una síntesis conceptual, y se delinean las perspectivas futuras y desafíos en el avance de la elucidación y evaluación de este constructo multidimensional en el campo de la Psicogerontología.
