A disciplina da administração passa pela fase fundamental de consolidação. Desde o início do século XX os estudiosos impingem à Administração uma nova roupagem, com o fito de aumentar a produção de forma eficiente e eficaz. A abordagem clássica, com Taylor e Fayol, enfatizou as tarefas e estrutura respectivamente. A Teoria Humanista inaugurou a era da humanização das organizações. Weber tentou apaziguar o conflito das duas abordagens, mas a Teoria da Burocracia apresentou muitas disfunções, pelo que foi taxada de “Teoria da Máquina”. A Abordagem estruturalista inaugurou o modelo de sistema aberto, inserindo a importância do ambiente para as organizações, tendo conseguido aproveitar o que tinha de bom as Abordagens Clássica e Burocrática. Mas foi o behaviorismo que introduziu o conceito de entendimento das necessidades humanas para compreensão da motivação que leva a maior produtividade.
