Este texto propõe uma reflexão sobre a tendência temática e metodológica na medievalÃstica
alemã nos últimos anos, que aborda as relações entre cristãos, muçulmanos e judeus na Idade Média. A
reflexão aqui apresentada critica a ideia de que as “raÃzes medievais da Europa†estão fundamentadas
unicamente na cultura carolÃngia, na ascensão do cristianismo e no estabelecimento dos reinos “bárbarosâ€,
pois, como recentes trabalhos da historiografia alemã têm ressaltado, devemos falar de “culturasâ€
medievais e não de “uma†cultura medieval, a considerar as profundas trocas culturais (em alemão
Kulturaustausch) entre cristãos, judeus e muçulmanos na Idade Média.
This paper proposes a reflection on the thematic and methodological tendency in the medieval
studies in Germany in the recent years, which deals with relations between Christians, Muslims and Jews
in the Middle Ages. The presented reflection criticizes the idea that "medieval roots of Europe" are based
solely on the rise of Christianity and the establishment of "barbarian" kingdoms. Instead of that, as recent
works of germane historiography has emphasized, we should talk about "medieval cultures", in order to
consider the intensive cultural exchanges (in German: Kulturaustausch) between Christians, Jews and
Muslims in the Middle Ages.
