O trecho fluvial entre Belém e Manaus há muitos anos era percorrido por populações nativas e suas práticas de navegação. O prático é ainda hoje o embarcadiço que guia e/ou pilota navios de diferentes calados. Com os avanços capitalistas na região, impulsionados pela expansão da navegação a vapor, a necessidade de compor tripulações com práticos experimentados obrigou armadores e comandantes a negociarem com habitantes e suas culturas de trabalho. Nos anos finais do oitocentos, de maior movimento náutico e portuário, companhias armadoras passaram a questionar o controle destes profissionais sobre o mercado de trabalho e os rumos dos navios. No advento da República, o governo provisório estabeleceu uma série de critérios que retirava a independência de trabalho dos marinheiros. O processo associativo dos práticos de Manaus e Belém é construído com base na força da tradição e do histórico de solidariedade, à revelia dos ataques políticos do empresariado e outros setores sociais dominantes. Foram esses os elementos que reforçaram a defesa de um associativismo que ia além das fronteiras delimitadas pela federação.
The river stretch between Belém and Manaus for many years was traversed by native communities and their navigation practices. The pilot is still today the sailor who guides and/or pilots ships of different drafts. From the capitalist push in the region, potentialized by the expansion of steam navigation, the need to compose crews with experienced pilots forced shipowners and commanders to negotiate with inhabitants and their work cultures. In the final years of the nineteenth century, with a greater nautical and port movement, shipping companies began to question the control of these professionals on the labor market and the direction of ships. In the advent of the Republic, the provisional government established a series of criteria that deprive the attention of these sailors. The associative process of the pilots of Manaus and Belém is based on the strength of tradition and the history of solidarity, the revelation of obstacles, political leaders and other social sectors. It was those elements that reinforced the defense of an associativism that went beyond the boundaries delimited by the federation.
