INTRODUÇÃO: A doença de Alzheimer caracteriza-se pela perda gradativa da memória e de atividades psicomotoras levando à incapacidade de realizar atividades de vida diária.OBJETIVO: Este estudo teve como finalidade analisar a literatura acerca dos principais desafios da odontologia frente a idosos com Alzheimer. METODOLOGIA: Foi realizadauma revisão integrativa, por meio de pesquisas nas bases de dados LILACS, SCIELO e PUBMED, utilizando o operador booleano AND, e como critérios de inclusão foram utilizados artigos publicados entre 2008 a 2018, nos idiomas português e inglês, disponíveis na íntegra. RESULTADOS: Analisou-se 22 artigos que trataram da temática proposta. Os resultados indicam que a doença de Alzheimer traz prejuízos à saúde bucal, resultando mais comumentena ocorrência de cárie e doença periodontal. Além disto, poucos profissionais estão aptos a tratar e cuidar desses pacientes. CONCLUSÃO: É necessária uma maior capacitação profissional para o cuidado destes pacientes, uma vez que o cirurgião-dentista encontrará limitações ao tratar portadores de Alzheimer.
INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease presents a gradual loss of memory and psychomotor activities, leading to the inability to perform activities of daily living. OBJECTIVE:This study aimed to analyze the literature on the main challenges of dentistry in the face of elderly people with Alzheimer's. METHODOLOGY:An integrative review was carried out, using searches in the LILACS, SCIELO and PUBMED databases, using the Boolean operator AND and using articles published between 2008 and 2018, in Portuguese and English, available in full. RESULTS:We analyzed 22 articles dealing with the proposed theme. The results that cause Alzheimer's disease cause damage to oral health, resulting more commonly in the occurrence of cariesand periodontal disease. In addition, few professionals are able to treat and care for these patients. CONCLUSION:Greater professional training is necessary for the treatment of these patients, since the dentist is authorized to treat Alzheimer's patients.
