Neste artigo estuda-se o desempenho de estudantes angolanos do ensino superior ao selecionar e aplicar ferramentas de Estatística Descritiva, gráficas e numéricas, assim como comparar o desempenho ao selecionar e aplicar essas ferramentas. Participaram no estudo 87 estudantes do ensino superior, que se encontravam a frequentar o 2.º ano dos cursos de Licenciatura em Contabilidade e Gestão e em Zootecnia, de um Instituto Superior Politécnico de Angola. Os estudantes responderam a um questionário sobre a seleção e aplicação de ferramentas de Estatística Descritiva, designadamente, representações tabelares e gráficas, estatísticas de localização e dispersão, simetria e dispersão de uma distribuição e estatísticas de correlação e regressão lineares. Em termos de resultados, destaca-se, em geral, o fraco desempenho dos estudantes tanto na seleção como na aplicação das ferramentas estatísticas e um melhor desempenho na seleção do que na aplicação dessas ferramentas. Estes resultados destacam a necessidade de melhorar o desempenho dos estudantes, pois as ferramentas de Estatística Descritiva são da maior relevância para o emprego, a vida quotidiana e a participação social.

This article studies the performance of Angolan higher education students when selecting and applying Descriptive Statistics tools, graphical and numerical tools, as well as comparing the performance when selecting and applying these tools. Eighty-seven higher education students participated in the study, whowere attending the 2nd year of the Degree in Accounting and Management and in Animal Science, at aHigher Polytechnic Institute of Angola. The students answered a questionnaire about the selection and application of Descriptive Statistics tools, namely, table and graphic representations, location anddispersion statistics, symmetry and dispersion of a distribution and linear correlation and regressionstatistics. In terms of results, in general, the poor performance of students in both the selection and application of statistical tools and a better performance in selection than in the application of these tools stand out. These results highlight the need to improve student performance, as Descriptive Statistics tools are of the utmost relevance for employment, everyday life, and social participation.
