Cerradão no sudoeste goiano.

The studies about populations’ spatial structure are important since the structuring process affects
several population genetic parameters, like the cross-breeding rate. The aim of this study was to identify the spatial
structure of a Vernonia aurea Mart. (Asteraceae) population in environments of a Cerradão fragment in the southeast
region of Goiás. Two areas of 6 x 3 m, one in the core and the other in the edge of the fragment, were split in 400 plots of
0.3 x 0.3 m, and all the individuals of this specie were counted. The Poisson distribution (random pattern), the negative
binomial distribution (aggregate pattern), the ratio variance/mean (I) and the Green coefficient (Ig) were used to detect the
population spatial pattern. We sampled 261 individuals in the core and 390 in the edge of fragment, with a number
medium of 1.31 and 1.95 individuals by plots and variances of 2.00 and 3.90, respectively. An aggregated spatial
distribution pattern was found for the population of V. aurea in the two environments analyzed (Poisson: G = 26,13, p <
0,001 in the core and G = 50,80, p < 0,001 in the edge; Negative Binomial: G = 6,34, p = 0,175 in the core and G = 1,88, p
= 0,930 in the edge), although with dispersal index smaller in the core (I = 1.53, d = 4.78 e Ig = 0.0021) of the fragment
than in the edge (I = 2.00, d = 8.28 e Ig = 0.0026). This is probably due to local differences established in the two
environments, characterized as edge effects.
