A imagem, em especial a obra de arte pictórica, é vista atualmente como documento histórico de indiscutÃvel valor. Cabe ao pesquisador estabelecer sua historicidade através da análise de sua natureza, atributos e condições de documento, procurando penetrar na compreensão do meio produtor. Entender o uso e a função da imagem pictórica no medievo desperta um amplo debate na tentativa de compreensão do seu status na sociedade da época. O presente trabalho busca apresentar de forma sintética os principais argumentos dos historiadores Hans Belting, Jean-Claude Schmitt, Jean Wirth, Jérôme Baschet e Jean-Claude Bonne no que se refere ao debate sobre a problemática imagética no perÃodo medieval.

The image, in particular the work of pictorial art, is now viewed as a historical document of unquestionable value. It is for the researcher to establish its historicity through analysis of their nature, attributes and conditions document, looking for deepening understanding of the medium producer. Understand the use and function of the pictorial image in medieval awakens a broad debate in an attempt to understand their status in society of the time. The present work summarizes the main arguments of the historians Hans Belting, Jean-Claude Schmitt, Jean Wirth, Jérôme Baschet and Jean-Claude Bonne regarding the debate on the issues imagery in the medieval period.
