O processo de urbanização da cidade de Araranguá/SC teve seu início na virada do século XIX para o século XX, momento no qual foi formulado seu plano urbano pelo engenheiro Antônio Lopes de Mesquita. Com as mudanças territoriais ocorridas durante a primeira metade do século XX, houve uma mudança de perspectiva na aplicação de tal plano. Na década de 1970, há um impulso na urbanização, vinculando o discurso da criação da identidade da cidade com as suas avenidas, que, com os investimentos da administração municipal, passaram a interligar diversos bairros em distintas regiões. Recentemente, com a reformulação do Plano Diretor, a cidade passa por um novo ciclo de urbanização. Com este trabalho, procuramos observar os diferentes momentos da formação do espaço urbano de Araranguá. Para isso, cotejamos informações oriundas da bibliografia sobre a história local, jornais e fotos antigas e registro de edificações históricas situadas na área central da cidade. Assim, procuramos argumentar que as transformações urbanas ocorridas em âmbito local parecem estar alinhadas com um discurso de buscar a identificação da cidade com uma perspectiva de futuro, com pouca ênfase em sua trajetória histórica.

The urbanization process of the city of Araranguá/SC (Brazil) began at the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century, when its urban project was formulated by Antônio Lopes de Mesquita. Due to the territorial changes that occurred during the first half of the twentieth century, there was a change of perspective in the application of such a project. In the 1970s the municipality resumed the urbanization path, linking the discourse of the creation of the city's identity with its avenues that, with the investments of the municipal administration, began to interconnect several neighborhoods in different regions. Recently, due to the reformulation of the Master Plan, the city goes through a new cycle of urbanization. In the scope of the present paper we try to observe the different moments of the formation of the urban space of Araranguá. For this, we collate information from bibliography on local history, newspapers and old photos and records of historic buildings located in the central area of the city. Thereby, we try to argue that the urban transformations that took place at the local level seem to be aligned with a discourse of seeking to identify the city with a perspective of the future, with little emphasis on its historical trajectory.
