Ao longo da época moderna as beatas gozaram de uma posição ambÃgua junto à igreja. Representavam, ao mesmo tempo, um modelo de perfeição cristã e um risco à hierarquia eclesiástica. Em Portugal, ao final do século XVIII, não foi diferente. Exceto por um fator: a dimensão polÃtica assumida pelo termo. Em meio ao regalismo e ao reformismo ilustrado régio, as beatas foram inseridas em uma verdadeira trama jacobeia-jesuÃtica. Assim, tendo como objeto de análise uma devassa aberta em Bragança no ano de 1775, este artigo pretende apresentar as diferentes motivações e disputas de poder que atuaram por trás do desejo de reforma da Igreja lusa ao final do século XVIII.
During the modern era the beatas had an ambiguous position at the church. They represented, at the same time, a model of Christian perfection and a risk to the ecclesiastical hierarchy. In Portugal, at the end of eighteenth century, wasn’t different. Except by one fact: the political dimension assumed by the term. According with the regalism and the regius ilustrated reformism, the beatas were inserted into a plot jacobean-jesuitical. Thus, having as object of analysis an inquest opened in Bragança in 1775, this work intends present the different motivations and power struggles that had acted behind the desire to reform the Portuguese church at the period.
