Este texto aborda a instituição do Juizado de Paz no Brasil Imperial, entre 1820 e
1830. O Juiz de Paz foi uma tentativa do Parlamento brasileiro em regular a influência do poder
central sobre as elites locais. Assim, o liberalismo retirou do Estado, o controle das forças
municipais e entregou aos cidadãos ativos através de eleições diretas. Cientes da importância do
juizado de paz para a polÃtica nacional, o presente texto tem por objetivo analisar as tensões que
envolveram juÃzes de paz na provÃncia da ParaÃba durante primeiro reinado e o perÃodo regencial.
Essa instituição mudou o cenário polÃtico administrativo provincial e foi utilizado como peça
estratégica pela elite regional. Este artigo é parte integrante da pesquisa de mestrado desenvolvida
junto ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em História/UFPB.
This text discusses the institution of the Justice of the Peace in Brazilian Empire,
between 1820 and 1830. The Justice of the Peace was an attempt by the Brazilian Parliament to
regulate the influence of the central government of local elites. Thus, liberalism withdrew from
the state, the control of local forces and handed over to active citizens through direct elections .
Realizing the importance of the peace court for national policy, this text aims to analyze the
tensions involving magistrates in the province of ParaÃba during first reign and Regency period
between 1824-1840. Analyzing how this has changed the provincial political important post
administrative setting and was used as a strategic of regional elite. This article is part of the
research carried out at the Master's Program Graduate in History/UFPB.
