The commercial cultivation of banana in Costa Rica began in the 1870’s in the Atlantic/Caribbean region
of the country. Its impetus must be understood in the context of the development of the export led
growth which strengthened a form of agrarian capitalism based on agricultural and cattle raising development. The present article intends to verge on the visible footprint left behind by the banana activity during its initial phase, since on the large scale it caused significant changes to the landscape. We will begin with a concise explanation of the banana boom in the region, then go on to analyze the new landscapes and different ways of life that appeared with the introduction of the banana industry, and conclude with a description of the diverse and humanized landscape of the banana plantations, in the liberal nineteenth century framework of order and progress.
