Com este artigo procura-se refletir sobre o estatuto conferido à alteridade extra-europeia
na obra do jesuÃta castelhano José de Acosta. Por um lado, tal análise permite destacar
alguns usos da “religião†como instrumento de compreensão das populações “bárbarasâ€;
por outro lado, trata-se de apontar para o nexo existente entre o projeto evangelizador
e a instituição de uma soberania castelhana sobre o Vice-Reino do Peru, na segunda
metade do século XVI.
The purpose of this article is to reflect on the status given to non European otherness
in the work of the castilian Jesuit José de Acosta. This analyzes allow us to highlight
some uses of “religion†as a tool for understanding the natives; furthermore, it aims at
emphasizing the link between the evangelizing project and the instituition of a Castilian
sovereignty over the vice royalty of Peru, in the second half of sixteenth century.
