DURMEVAL TRIGUEIRO MENDES: IDÉIAS, PROPOSTAS E ATUAÇÃO

O trabalho destaca alguns momentos-chave da atuação do educador, ao longo de sua trajetória pessoal e
profissional, procurando apreender suas idéias e propostas sobre educação e universidade no país, durante
os anos de 1956 a 1987. Com base em seus estudos serão examinadas as acepções referentes às categorias:
totalidade, qualidade/quantidade, teoria e prática, relação ensino e pesquisa, sempre presentes
em seus trabalhos, assinalando o questionamento da compartimentalização do real, quando analisa o sistema
educacional brasileiro. Em sua extensa obra, verifica-se a reiteração de alguns temas que considerava
relevantes, não para abordá-los de forma linear e repetitiva, mas em busca de um aprofundamento
constante. Exame atento de algumas de suas concepções e propostas levam-me a ressaltar a pertinência
de suas idéias e reflexões, destacando-se a concepção de universidade como parte de uma realidade concreta,
voltada para a formação de especialistas e técnicos altamente qualificados e tendo como exigência
integrar ensino-pesquisa; a questão da autonomia universitária; a relação entre saber e poder; a expansão
e o acesso ao ensino superior; a relação educação geral e educação técnica e a função da pós-graduação,
entre outras. Passadas quase três décadas, parece-me que as reflexões e propostas desse pensador/educador
continuam válidas, oferecendo subsídios a novos estudos e pesquisas na área de educação, especialmente
no que se refere à questão da universidade, no Brasil. Finalizando, assinalo que a marca profunda de
Durmeval Trigueiro Mendes consistia no fato de viver a fundo suas convicções, o que se expressa na
vitalidade de suas propostas e na coerência entre pensar e agir.

This study highlights some key moments in the acts of this educator throughout his personal and professional
trajectory, seeking to grasp his ideas and proposals regarding education and university in the country
from the year 1956 to 1987. Based on his studies, the sense of various categories will be examined — the
categories of totality, quality/quantity, theory and practice, and the relation between teaching and research,
always present in his work, indicating a questioning of the compartmentalizing of reality when analyzing
the Brazilian educational system. In his extensive works, one notices the reiteration of some themes that
he considered relevant, not to approach them in a linear and repetitive way, but in search of constant
deepening. An attentive examination of some of his concepts and proposals leads me to emphasize the
pertinence of his ideas and reflections, highlighting the concept of the university as part of a concrete
reality for the purpose of educating highly trained specialists and technicians and with the demand of
integrating teaching and research; the question of university autonomy; the relationship between knowledge
and power; the expansion of and access to higher education; the relationship between general education
and technical education; and the function of graduate studies, among other issues. With the passage of
three decades, it appears to me that the reflections and proposals of this thinker/educator continue to be
valid, offering support to new studies and research in the area of education, especially in respect to the
question of the university in Brazil. In conclusion, I indicate that the deepest mark that Durmeval Trigueiro
Mendes made consisted in the fact of profoundly living out his convictions, which expresses itself in
the vitality of his proposals and in the coherence between thinking and acting.
