Este estudo objetiva verificar a eficiência operacional na geração de desempenho das empresas brasileiras distribuidoras de energia elétrica. Para tanto, desenvolveu-se pesquisa descritiva, documental e quantitativa. A amostra compreendeu 13 organizações brasileiras distribuidoras de energia elétrica com informações de 2013 a 2017 extraídas da Economática® e analisadas mediante técnica de Análise Envoltória de Dados (DEA). Os resultados apontam, referente à gestão dos custos de produção a fim de gerar receitas, que a empresa CEMIG é a mais eficiente no acumulado do período, enquanto a organização CEEE-D apresenta o pior desempenho. No que concerne à eficiência no gerenciamento de despesas operacionais também para com o output receita, a empresa com melhor score foi a COSERN, enquanto a organização CEMAR obteve o pior resultado. Numa análise macro, tem-se que há distinções no ranqueamento de eficiência na gestão de custos de produção e despesas operacionais, sugerindo que o melhor gerenciamento do primeiro não garante posicionamento similar quanto ao segundo, tendo, portanto, praticamente todas as empresas necessidades de melhorias futuras a fim de maximizar seu desempenho, sejam em custos, despesas ou em ambos. Logo, esta pesquisa traz insights a inúmeros interessados da informação, sobretudo gestores, que devem observa-los buscando fortalecer as empresas que administram.

This study aims at verifying the operational efficiency in the generation of performance of the Brazilian electricity distribution companies. To reach such a goal, a descriptive, documentary and quantitative research was developed. The sample comprised 13 Brazilian electricity distribution organizations with information at the period of 2013 to 2017 extracted from Economática® and analyzed using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique. The results indicate that the CEMIG company is the most efficient in the accumulated of the period, while the organization CEEE-D presents the worst performance. Regarding the efficiency in the management of operational expenses also for revenue output, the company with the best score was COSERN, while the CEMAR organization obtained the worst result. In a macro analysis, it has been observed that there are distinctions in the ranking of efficiency in the management of production costs and operating expenses, suggesting that the better management of the first does not guarantee similar positioning in relation to the second one, having, therefore, practically all the companies needs improvements in order to maximize their performance, whether in costs, expenses or both. Therefore, this research brings insights to many information stakeholders, especially managers, who should observe them in order to strengthen the companies they manage.
