Desde o final do século XIX, as elites, na tentativa empreender práticas culturais modernas, buscaram substituir festas religiosas, entrudos e outros divertimentos considerados desatualizados por lazeres modernos como o cinema, o footing e os carnavais europeizados. Seguindo este contexto, tal artigo pretende perceber como a fundação dos clubes esportivos em Salvador representou para as elites uma tentativa de criar novas formas e espaços de sociabilidades modernos. A partir da análise da estrutura dos clubes e dos eventos sociais organizados e protagonizados por estes, a ideia é compreender a emergência dos clubes esportivos no bojo da modernização da cidade. Ao final, oferecendo aos frequentadores um ambiente em que podiam conhecer novas pessoas, participar de confraternizações e praticar esportes, entendemos que os clubes constituíram novos espaços modernos da cidade.

Since the late nineteenth century, the elites, in an attempt to undertake modern
cultural practices, sought to replace the religious festivals, entrudos, and others entertainments
considered outdated by modern leisure, activities such as cinema, the footing and europeanized
carnivals. Following this context, this paper aims to understand how the foundation of sports
clubs in Salvador for elites represented an attempt to create new forms and spaces of modern
sociability. From the analysis of the structure of clubs, parties and social events organized and
stellated by them, the idea is to understand the emergence of sports clubs in the wake of the
modernization of the city. In the end, giving to the members an environment where they could
meet new people, participating in social gatherings and playing sports, we understand the sports
clubs as new modern spaces in the city.
