Ao publicar as Primeiras Trovas Burlescas (1859), Luiz Gama tornava evidente a sua
caracterÃstica de crÃtico implacável da sociedade. O objetivo deste artigo é, a partir da análise de
poemas retirados desta obra, verificar como o poeta utiliza a sátira e a paródia para criticar as
imoralidades do seu tempo. Para tanto, servem como fundamentação teórica as proposições de Propp e
Bergson sobre o riso e as de Linda Hutcheon sobre a paródia. Luiz Gama, nos seus versos, castiga os
vÃcios, os indivÃduos e as instituições. Além disso, combate o preconceito (inclusive o dos mulatos) e
defende a igualdade.

By publishing Primeiras Trovas Burlescas [First Burlesque Ballads] (1859), Luiz Gama
made clear his characteristic of an implacable critic of society. The aim of this article is, starting from the analysis of some poems taken from that work, to verify how the poet uses satire and parody to criticize the immoral acts of his time. To do that, the prepositions by Propp and Bergson about laughing and the ones by Linda Hutcheon about parody serve as theorical fundaments. Luiz Gama, in his verses, punishes vices, individuals and institutions. In addition, fights prejudice (even the one from the mulattos) and defends equality.
