Em um mundo onde já não existe um saber estanque e “dono†de qualquer verdade
absoluta, existe uma história que dê conta do real? Qual o papel atual do historiador e do
romancista de ficção? Os estudos interdisciplinares entre literatura e história há algum tempo
passam por intensos questionamentos no que diz respeito às fronteiras que essas duas
disciplinas impõem – ou deixam de fazê-lo. Nas Américas, muitos romancistas possuem a
caracterÃstica de “misturar†a ficção (invenção) à história (verdade), fazendo com que o leitor
se interrogue se aquilo que está lendo ocorreu de fato ou se é simplesmente a imaginação do
escritor que criou tal narrativa. A presente reflexão analisará a obra El arpa y la sombra, do
escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier, o qual relatou as expectativas e as confissões daquele que
ousou cruzar o mundo e chegou a um novo continente – o navegador genovês Cristóvão
Colombo. O autor busca fatos históricos para (re)contar a proposta de beatificação do Grande
Almirante e qual sua própria opinião sobre o fato. Através do questionamento de verdades
estabelecidas, o autor (re)cria uma nova história não documentada do ‘descobridor’ das
Américas.
In a world where there is no steady knowledge, which “owns†any and all the truth,
would there be a history that could account for the real world? Which is the current role of
historians and novelists? Interdisciplinary studies associated with literature and history have
been questioning for a long time what the boundaries imposed – or not – by such subjects are.
In Americas, many novelists have “mixed†fiction (invention) and history (truth), making the
reader wonder about what he/she is reading: is it a real fact or only the result of the writer’s
imagination. This study will analyze El arpa y la sombra, by the Cuban writer Alejo
Carpienter. This author reported expectations and confessions of a man who dared to cross the
world and arrived in a new continent – the Genoese navigator Christopher Columbus. The
author relies on historical facts to re(tell) the proposal of beatification of this man and to give
his own opinion on the fact. Through questioning of established truths, the author (re)creates a
new non-documented history of the ‘Discoverer’ of the Americas.
