The short story “Noite de Almirante” [An Admiral’s Night], by nineteenth century Brazilian author Machado de Assis, was first published in 1884 by the newspaper Gazeta de Notícias, in Rio de Janeiro. This essay brings my experience as a teacher guiding twenty first century students, in Porto Alegre, through an interactional approach of reading that was performed during our literature lessons. This analysis reconstructs the struggle between different points of view trying to realize which shape and content have forged the story. If, on one hand, we have young readers who immediately identify the mimesis of love, on the other hand they face such a tricky narrator, that the whole reading experience leads them to alternate their perspective on the storyline by sometimes shaping their views away from that initial conclusion, while at some other times bringing them back to the point of view of Deolindo Venta-Grande, the infatuated character.
